Today I am excited to welcome weight loss and lifestyle coach Nichole Kellerman to guest blog at Skinny Mom’s Kitchen.

When my clients come to me to lose weight they always share these horror stories of their last diets, and there seems to be a repetitive theme. Restriction, deprivation, starvation and misery. It’s no wonder they are placed perfectly in my lap because I am 100% against every single one of those things as a weight loss coach!
My whole philosophy – Party With Life & Lose Weight FOR GOOD!
I know, sounds too good to be true, but I have proof people…This works. When you start having more fun; shaking your booty, smiling, laughing and glowing, the weight comes off with joy.
Want a little taste? Before you start a weight loss journey, I want you to ask yourself the following 5 questions.
Whats your “self-sabotagers” name?
It has been proven that any sort of change is 80% mental and 20% mechanical, and where most diets focus is the mechanics. Yes this plays a role, but as you can see addressing that self sabotaging voice is a huge part of the equation.
I have found that when you put a name to that voice (mine is Helga) your ability to stop her in her tracks and continue reaching your goals is so much easier. Plus I have to say, puttin’ on your boxing gloves and taking her down is pretty fun!
What would you do or how would you act if you were at your ideal weight right now?
So often when us women are trying to lose weight we end up “waiting on the weight” to get out and live our lives.
You say things like, “When I lose weight I’ll be ______” or “When I lose weight I’ll do_____”
Well I am telling you if you go out and do all of those things now, your dream body will be knocking on your door sooner than later! Why? Like attracts like, so if you are doing all of those things you FEEL INCREDIBLE, powerful, confident, and happy. Which only means more of those incredible feelings will come rushing towards you and you’ll no longer need junk food to satisfy not feeling that incredible-ness.
What do you want in life besides losing weight? What do you want MORE than losing weight?
This goes hand-in-hand with question two. When we focus so much on the weight (and wanting it gone) we forget about the bigger picture, our red carpet dream.
Again, when you get out and start living your red carpet dream, and feel those feelings, your dreams it will come racing to you so fast you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it earlier. Oh, and the weight, it will take care of itself
.
What types of exercise or ways of moving your body do you enjoy? Think of when you were younger.
You don’t have to go to the gym to lose weight, period. Sitting on an elliptical for an hour sounds dreadful in my opinion so it is time to figure out what works for you and YOUR body.
When you explore ways to move your body that lights you up, exercise feels like going to the club with your girlfriends as opposed to going to dinner with your in-laws. There is laughter, smiles and a ton of fun!
How do you usually eat your food? What does your environment feel like, how do you feel?
Ohhh this is such a juicy topic (pun intended). This is a counter intuitive approach, but if you pay more attention on HOW you eat instead of WHAT you eat, shedding the weight no longer feels like your depriving yourself.
Yes, of course what you put into your mouth matters, but so often when we eat the right things we still don’t lose. It could be? You’re missing the “how”.
If you are always distracted when you’re eating (watching T.V., reading an email, checking your phone, reading, distracted) your body, A- has no idea you’re eating because your mind is so distracted, and you end up overeating. And B- you’re stressed! When you are stressed you increase fat no matter how clean your diet is. Heck, you can gain weight eating an apple if you are distracted while doing it.

Could not agree more with the part about the mental side! That’s what it was for me to lose weight (it’s been gone for good for several years). It is the same thing with every new physical challenge I go through as well!
Totally Abby, the mental side is imperative and the fact that you have kept the weight off proves you have that well under control.
Way to go!
I agree. I think you should consider these types of questions when you’re in maintaining and/or setting new challenges for yourself. It’s easy to get off track or lose sight of our initial goals.
I totally agree Dana, these aren’t just questions about weight loss they’re really questions to ask yourself when trying to reach any type of goal
My sabotage name is Bertha. I lost 75 lbs since July of 2011 and reached my goal weight but then I had major surgery plus a follow up emergency surgery 10 days later just a week and a half ago. I am restricted from doing any aerobic type activity for 6 weeks. They said I can walk, but I also have bursitis really bad in my hips and can only go a little over a mile before my hips vehemently protest. I am now struggling with portion control again and am scared of gaining weight back until I can go to the gym again. I am up 3 lbs now. Do you have any advice or tips??? I was not on any program or special diet, I just started working out and eating healthier food (lots of recipes from you, btw) to lose the weight. Thanks for any help.
Just found your website tonight, looks awesome so I subscribed in google reader. I’m an Organizing Junkie reader and followed her link. I did notice an error in your tabs at the top. Under Tips, Tricks, and how-to’s the first choice “Calorie Awareness” is spelled Awarness without the “e” in the middle. Keep up the amazing work and I hope I can say the same thing one day after I’ve gotten my weight under control.
Hi lisa! Thanks for stopping by and catching that…just fixed it. Keep in touch and let me know how your weight loss is going – I know you will do great!
I absolutely agree with where you eat. I don’t eat in my living room in front of the tv, but I do eat at the computer….constantly. It is in my kitchen to make things worse. My husband has agreed to move the computer to a vacant corner of the living room by a nice window. Sounds like a good first step to get me away from eating on the computer. Thanks for the idea.
